The same way clothing is a basic necessity for people, so also is coating, if you think of the sustainability of the assets in the Oil & Gas and Marine sectors. In this light, Seaweld Engineering Ltd has developed sustainable solutions to several forms of galvanic protection, significant amongst which is Xylan Coating.
Traditional coating processes has been an important aid in protecting assets since the advent of modern society, nonetheless it has been associated with certain limitation that technology has come to improve. Some of these limitations include (temperature resistance, flexibility, friction properties, low dry film thickness performance etc)
The exposure of these assets to complex forms of both direct and indirect extreme operating conditions, that could compromise the structural integrity of these assets requires the use of cathodic protection to remedy possible galvanic epidemic. The rampancy of these pitfalls led to the research and development of a synthetic polymer known as Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or best put, Xylan or Teflon.
Xylan is a special combination of fluoropolymers and other high performing resins which melts during baking to provide excellent chemical resistance by providing tough non-porous films, excellent abrasive resistance and in addition to its lowest coefficient friction properties it has excellent non-stick properties.
Xylan also has excellent physical and chemical properties that allows for it to withstand the harsh conditions of the Oil & Gas/ Marine environment, with high temperature resistance up to 204 C. Diversities in specific methods of coating dictated the production of xylan to be in either water or powdered forms. Related industries that require Xylan coating includes: Oil & gas, Marine, Medical applications, High tech tool industries, Non-stick cooking ware industries, Food processing plants and many more.
Trelleborg is the world’s leading producer of innovative and field-proven polymer engineered products that answers the challenges of several industries, including Oil & Gas, food processing, and other specialized applications. As a means of providing troubleshooting response to problems in extreme operating environments and severe fatigue conditions, the products are designed to offer a variety of unique physical and chemical properties to meet demanding performance requirements.
The film galvanising system ZINGA combines many advantages; an active or cathodic protection, a passive barrier protection and an easy application. In order to offer a galvanic protection, a zinc concentration of at least 92% has to be present in the dry extract. Having 96% of zinc in the dry film, ZINGA® certainly meets this condition. ZINGA® offers an excellent active and passive protection: The special zinc ⇒ “active”, cathodic protection.
The barrier, provided by both the zinc oxides and the binder ⇒ passive protection.
